Inflation hits consumers hard, but many don't grasp its impact despite saving efforts

Almost two-thirds of banks and finance companies are worried that pressures on household finances will increase default rates on consumer debt. In the face of these headwinds, consumers are doing their best to organise their finances more efficiently – and even to save.

Consumers who have had a better financial education are more efficient at managing their debt.

Many consumers worry that they lack a good understanding of their finances, often because they have never had much in the way of financial education. Some say that they would rather bury their heads in the sand.

European women are more likely to struggle with unexpected costs.

The savings gap between men and women is not getting any smaller: women are, for a variety of reasons, still struggling to put money aside at the same rate as men.

European Payment Report 2023

The report is based on a survey that was conducted simultaneously in 29 European countries between the end of November 2022 and March 2023. A total of 10,556 companies across 15 industries in Europe participated in the research.
