European Consumer Payment Report 2023

The European Consuymer Payment Report 2023 is based on insights from 20,000 consumers across 20 European countries. It provides an overview of consumers' ability to pay bills on time and highlights evolving attitudes towards financial commitments. This report was released in November 2023.

Ongoing economic pressure on households

Despite some recent stabilisation, many consumers are still struggling with rising costs. Nearly half (49%) report having less spending money after paying essential bills than a year ago, reflecting the ongoing pressure on household finances.

Normalising missed payments

With 35% of consumers admitting to having skipped at least one bill payment in the past year, societal attitudes towards missed payments are changing. Many now view skipping payments as a viable option when finances are tight.

Need for financial literacy

Many consumers feel disempowered, with only 38% claiming to have strong financial literacy. Enhancing understanding of financial concepts can help consumers better manage their finances and regain control over their financial situations.
